UK Castle Route – 4 Stage Motorcycle Roadbook
A LUNAR 2.0 heritage route from Northumberland to Wessex, rebuilt from the 4-leg route data and ready for EMJ publication.
Intro and general roadbook
This four-stage roadbook follows the uploaded UK Castle Route from Bamburgh Castle to Winchester Cathedral, keeping the route structure unchanged while presenting it as a clear long-distance motorcycle journey. It begins on the Northumberland coast, where the sea-facing fortress of Bamburgh gives the ride a dramatic start before the line turns towards Castle Point Lime Kilns and the Holy Island landscape. From there, the route moves inland through Wooler and the B6320, entering wilder northern country around Kielder Waterside and the Roman frontier at Housesteads Roman Fort.
The second stage changes mood, crossing the Pennine and Dales belt through Kendal Castle, Sedbergh, Hawes, Settle and Skipton. This is the most open and upland part of the ride, with fast weather changes, stone towns and broad riding scenery. Stage three then links Yorkshire gritstone roads with the Peak District and the historic Midlands, using Holmfirth, Ladybower Reservoir, Castleton, Bakewell, Ashbourne, Lichfield Clock Tower and Tamworth as real waypoints rather than optional detours.
The final leg rides south through Stratford-upon-Avon, Burford, the Marlborough area, Pewsey, the Salisbury plain edge and Romsey, before reaching Winchester. The result is a heritage-led, north-to-south touring route of 891.62 km (554 mi), with four practical stages, castle references, Roman history, upland riding and a strong Wessex finish.

Technical overview
Practical riding notes
Expect exposed coastal weather near Bamburgh and Holy Island, forest remoteness around Kielder, fast-changing conditions over the Pennines and heavier traffic around West Yorkshire, the Midlands and the southern approach to Winchester. Check tide restrictions before riding to Holy Island, carry waterproof layers and avoid pushing the full distance into fewer days.
Seasonality and safety
The ideal season is May to September, with June and early September offering the best balance between daylight and traffic. Winter riding can be affected by ice, standing water and reduced visibility in Northumberland, Cumbria, the Dales and the Peak District. Overall effort level: moderate, rising to challenging in poor weather.
