Technical overview
Total distance: approx. 615 km
Stages: 3
Indicative stage range: 190–225 km per stage
Road type: almost entirely paved secondary roads, rolling hill sections, woodland corridors, volcanic lake roads and historic-town connectors.
Riding character: scenic touring with cultural depth rather than fast point-to-point riding; ideal for road bikes, sport-tourers and road-oriented adventure bikes.
Loop logic: Bracciano → Vico / Tolfa → Bolsena → Civita / Orvieto / Narni → Bomarzo / Martignano → Bracciano.
Indicative mileage note: final effective km may vary slightly according to old-town parking, viewpoint stops, restaurant detours and walking visits.
Practical riding notes
This revised version has been deliberately extended to fit a proper touring rhythm. The natural lake loop in northern Lazio is beautiful but too short for a satisfying multi-stage EMJ-style ride, so the route now expands west into the Tolfa hills, north towards Orvieto and east into the Amelia–Narni corridor before closing via Bomarzo and the Sabatini lakes.
Stage 1 is the best scenic opener: lakefront flow, wooded Vico curves and a very rewarding extension through Tolfa before the arrival at Bolsena. Stage 2 is the most complete day in cultural and riding terms, combining Civita di Bagnoregio with stronger hill-road mileage through Orvieto, Amelia and Narni. Stage 3 is slightly softer, but still substantial enough to feel like a proper final stage rather than a simple transfer back.
The route works especially well with two nights in Bolsena and the final return to Bracciano. That keeps luggage movements efficient while preserving a clean narrative arc across the three riding days.
Historic centres such as Civita di Bagnoregio, Orvieto, Narni and Bomarzo should be treated as proper travel stops rather than quick pass-throughs. In summer, an early start is advisable, especially on the longer middle stage.
Seasonality & safety
Best season: April to June and September to October.
Spring gives the strongest contrast between open volcanic lake scenery and the greener woodland belts around Vico, Tolfa and Martignano. Early autumn is often the most balanced season overall, with softer light, more stable temperatures and less traffic pressure around major lakefront areas.
Summer: fully rideable, but hotter around Bolsena, Orvieto and the lower Tuscia inland stretches. Use the cooler morning hours for the more exposed sections and reserve walking visits for early arrival or shaded phases of the day.
Road awareness: expect slower traffic in town approaches, occasional rougher surfaces in secondary hill sections, possible damp shaded patches around forested areas near Vico and Martignano, and pedestrian-heavy zones around Civita di Bagnoregio and the main lakefront promenades.
Difficulty level: Moderate. The challenge is not technical riding, but stage consistency, occasional tighter inland roads and the accumulation of scenic/cultural stops that can lengthen the day if not managed well.
Roadbook · Stages 1–3
Touring mileage: 180–220 km per stage with scenic motorcycle roads and no artificial motorway stretches.
Stage 1 — Bracciano → Trevignano → Sutri → Lake Vico → Ronciglione → Tolfa → Tarquinia hills → Montefiascone → Bolsena (~205 km)
A true opening motorcycle stage with lakes, forest bends and the superb roads of the Tolfa hills.
Start from Bracciano and ride the classic lake road to Trevignano Romano. After Sutri, enter the woodland curves of Lake Vico and continue via Ronciglione.
Instead of going directly north, extend the riding flow westwards through Tolfa, one of the best overlooked motorcycle areas near Rome. The roads here are excellent: rolling hills, long visibility and almost no urban interruption.
Continue through the scenic inland road above Tarquinia, then turn back inland to Montefiascone before the final descent to Bolsena.
Indicative km: 200–210 km

Stage 2 — Bolsena → Capodimonte → Tuscania → Viterbo → Civita di Bagnoregio → Orvieto → Amelia → Narni → Bolsena (~220 km)
The strongest riding day of the whole loop, mixing culture and longer flowing roads.
Ride the southern side of the lake through Capodimonte and continue to Tuscania and Viterbo.
After the bridge walk at Civita di Bagnoregio, continue north-west to Orvieto, which gives the stage much better motorcycle mileage.
Then ride south-east through Amelia and Narni, two excellent hill-town roads with very good riding flow.
Close the loop back to Bolsena.

Stage 3 — Bolsena → Bomarzo → Vitorchiano → Oriolo Romano → Anguillara → Lake Martignano → Bracciano (~190 km)
A softer but still full final stage, ideal for the loop closure.
Leave Bolsena towards Bomarzo and visit the Sacro Bosco.
Continue through Vitorchiano and the wooded inland line to Oriolo Romano.
Instead of returning directly to Bracciano, extend the ride south around Anguillara Sabazia and make the beautiful detour to Lake Martignano, one of the most peaceful riding areas in the Sabatini volcanic district.
Final return to Bracciano.
