The journey

EMJ Route #128 is a true three-stage loop from Girona, linking the Mediterranean coast, Empordà, Garrotxa, Ripollès and Montseny without deliberately repeating the same roads. Stage 1 reaches the Costa Brava through Tossa de Mar, Begur and the Empordà plain before the exposed approach to Cadaqués. Stage 2 turns inland through medieval villages and volcanic Garrotxa before climbing to Ripoll. Stage 3 is the longest: Olot and Vic lead into the forest roads and shaded bends of Montseny, followed by a different return corridor to Girona.

The accepted rider-supplied GPX remains the single geometry and elevation source. The route is predominantly paved and prioritises secondary roads. Tramuntana wind, coastal traffic, mountain rain, autumn leaf litter and damp shaded surfaces can materially change the effort; Stage 3 needs an early departure and daylight reserve.

Seasonality & Weather

Best window: May–June and September–October

Coastal wind, mountain rain and shaded forest surfaces can change conditions quickly. Check forecasts, road restrictions and Cap de Creus access immediately before riding. In 2026, motorised access on the Cadaqués–Cap de Creus lighthouse road is restricted on 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25 and 31 October from 09:30 to 19:00; use the park shuttle/parking arrangement when the restriction is active.

Rider preparation

Recommended kit

Navigation

Download the route GPX and ITN before departure; retain an offline map and check waypoints.

Weather

Carry waterproof layers and check coastal wind plus mountain weather before the Garrotxa, Ripollès and Montseny sections.

Fuel

Review the stage fuel plan and check station hours before setting off.

Visits

Confirm opening times and reservations for monasteries, museums, protected-area access and arrival activities.

Rider Clothing & Kit

Prepare for coast, wind and mountain changes

Protective layers

Use CE-rated riding gear with a compact waterproof and windproof layer. Mountain temperatures and shaded roads may differ substantially from the valleys.

Hydration

Carry drinking water and allow time for breaks, particularly on warm summer days.

Visibility & power

Carry a clear visor, spare gloves, offline navigation and a reliable phone or GPS charger.

Useful extras

A compact tyre-repair and inflation kit, first aid and secure luggage are practical additions.

Practical Recommendations

Ride the shape, not the clock

Road rhythm

Allow extra time for bends, forest roads, viewpoints and town approaches. Do not use average speed as the only planning target.

Fuel & daylight

Start each Stage with sufficient fuel and use the route-specific primary and backup stops. Preserve daylight for mountain and cave-area visits.

Navigation

Follow the accepted GPX. Confirm that any navigation-device route preserves the intended road geometry and does not introduce shortcuts.

Local logistics

The route is in Catalonia, Spain. Confirm accommodation, motorcycle parking and local access restrictions before departure.

Girona–Costa Brava Airport is closest to the route start; Barcelona is the principal international gateway. Verify motorcycle-rental collection and transfer logistics before travel.

Motorcycle rental for Girona

Fly-and-ride planning

Confirm a route-suitable motorcycle rental in Girona or at the chosen gateway before travel. Verify motorcycle category, luggage, insurance, deposit, mileage policy and collection logistics directly with the operator.
