The journey

EMJ Route #119 is an 881 km cross-border loop built around Saxon Switzerland, the Czech and German Ore Mountains, the Elbe Sandstones and Upper Lusatia. The accepted GPX deliberately uses different western corridors on the outbound and return legs, removing the duplicated-road problem that affected the earlier draft.

Six stages keep every riding day below the current EMJ 200 km operating ceiling. The result is a route with time for fortresses, spa towns, mining heritage, sandstone walks and historic centres rather than a sequence of long transit days. The strongest riding comes in the Erzgebirge; the strongest destination experiences are Karlovy Vary, Tisá, Görlitz and Dresden.

The route is all-paved in intent, but mountain weather and road works can change quickly. Recheck live conditions immediately before travel and treat the downloadable navigation geometry as a planning aid rather than a substitute for current road signs and closures.

Food & wine

A taste map of the whole route

The loop crosses two culinary cultures several times. In Saxony, look for hearty regional cooking, potato dishes, local beer and wines from the Elbe valley around Radebeul and Meissen. In North and West Bohemia, the route adds Czech lagers, spa wafers and classic dumpling-based dishes. Karlovy Vary is also associated with Becherovka, while Litoměřice sits close to the historic Bohemian wine-growing area.

Practical recommendations

How to ride this loop

Road rhythm

Expect medium-speed touring rather than fast progress. Sandstone tourist zones, border villages and the Erzgebirge all reward early starts.

Season

Best from May to October, with June to September the safest default for higher mountain sections. Recheck weather before every Stage.

Tyres & bike

Road-touring, sport-touring and adventure motorcycles are all suitable. Good wet-grip tyres matter more than off-road ability.

Documents

The route crosses Germany and Czechia repeatedly. Carry the documents and insurance evidence required for your nationality and bike.

Recommended clothing / rider kit

Pack for exposed ridges and wet sandstone roads

Layering

Use a ventilated base/mid-layer combination with a compact warm layer. Temperatures can drop noticeably on Klínovec, the Erzgebirge ridges and Ještěd even when Dresden is mild.

Rain & visibility

Carry a genuinely waterproof outer layer or waterproof textile suit, waterproof gloves and a clear visor with anti-fog solution/Pinlock. Shaded forest roads can remain wet after the rain stops.

Footwear & protection

CE-rated touring/ADV boots and gloves are preferable to lightweight city gear. Several POIs involve short walks on uneven sandstone or historic paving, so usable walking grip helps.

Daily essentials

Pack water, a power bank/charging lead, tyre-repair kit, compact first-aid kit and a small cloth for visor cleaning. Keep cross-border documents and emergency contacts accessible rather than buried in luggage.

Airport

Dresden gateway

Dresden Airport (DRS) is the nearest commercial airport to the start/finish city.

Route files

Free GPX and Roadbook

Use the .gpx file for Garmin and most GPS/navigation apps, or the .itn file for compatible TomTom devices. Import the file and check the route before departure; current closures, local signs and live navigation always take priority.
