Intro
Today’s route is a Tunisia deep-dive that starts with Mediterranean light around Tunis, climbs into the cork-oak hills of the northwest, then points south across the steppe towards the palm-fringed oases of Tozeur and the dune lines near Douz. From there, the mood shifts to island time in Djerba before a relaxed run up the coast via Gabès and Sousse, closing the loop back in the capital. The legs are built around real waypoints (POIs used as route anchors), so you can track each hop precisely — and open every leg in Google Maps with one tap. Expect fast A-roads where you need to reposition, and slower scenic stretches where Tunisia feels most rewarding: Roman sites, medina alleys, and desert edge panoramas.

Leg-by-leg
Leg 1 — Tunis → Tabarka (via Bizerte & Cap Serrat)
A coastal warm-up: thread out of Tunis, skim the lagoons towards Bizerte, then hug the greener northwest towards Cap Serrat and the forested approaches into Tabarka.
Leg 2 — Tabarka → Kairouan (via Le Kef)
From pine-scented hills to interior plains: a satisfying crossing that feels “big” without being exhausting, with a medina-rich finish in Kairouan.
Leg 3 — Kairouan → Tozeur (via Gafsa)
A long, purposeful push south. Break it with a café stop in Gafsa before the first palms appear and Tozeur’s oasis geometry takes over.
Leg 4 — Tozeur → Chebika → Tamerza → Douz
This is the “desert-edge cinema” leg: tiny mountain oases, canyon viewpoints, and then the clean line of Douz at the dune frontier.
Leg 5 — Douz → Matmata → Djerba (Houmt Souk)
Roll out of Douz, climb into Matmata’s lunar hillsides, then drop back to the coast and finish on Djerba with a sunset harbour stroll.
Leg 6 — Djerba → Gabès (via Zarzis)
An easy coastal move: salt flats, fishing villages, and the first real “mainland again” feeling as you reach Gabès’ palm-lined seafront.
Leg 7 — Gabès → Sousse (via El Jem)
Tunisia’s Roman highlight in the middle of a clean coastal ride: El Jem is your anchor before you reach Sousse for a lively evening by the medina walls.
Leg 8 — Sousse → Tunis (via Carthage)
A simple reposition north — then slow down for the final evening: Carthage and Sidi Bou Said give you the “Tunisia postcard” closer.
