Oslo to Haukeli · Valleys, Industry & Highland Edge
Leave Oslo along the fjord and slide into the Drammen valley before turning towards the mining town of Kongsberg. From here the road tightens and climbs into the deep industrial canyon of Rjukan, with Vemork sitting high above the valley. The final stretch rises onto more open ground towards Rauland and Haukeli, where the mountains and plateaux announce the approach to Hardangervidda.
- Oslo / Opera House area – rollout point by the waterfront; fuel up and leave via main roads towards Drammen.
- Drammen – follow the river corridor; optional detour up to Spiraltoppen Viewpoint .
- Kongsberg – coffee stop or short visit to the Silver Mines ; then continue west on valley roads.
- Rjukan – dramatic industrial valley; detour to Vemork Museum for the WWII heavy-water story.
- Rauland – quieter highland village; roads start to feel more open and flowing.
- Haukeli / Haukeligrend – end of Day 1; base for exploring the edges of Hardangervidda and preparing for Day 2.
