Epic Moto Journey
Every road tells a story. Ride the one that’s yours!
Modular helmets offer great flexibility. Moreover, they are ideal for touring riders.
1. Why Choose a Modular Helmet: Advantages and Real-World Use
The modular helmet has become one of the most popular choices among modern riders thanks to its ideal balance of safety, versatility and everyday practicality. Unlike a traditional full-face helmet, a modular allows the chin bar to be lifted, transforming it into an open-face design within seconds. This makes it extremely useful in many situations: talking at toll booths, short stops, touring breaks, urban riding and long-distance journeys where comfort and temperature management are essential.
For frequent travellers, a modular helmet is an invaluable companion. Opening the chin bar improves ventilation during stops and makes communication easier without removing the helmet completely. Models with P/J dual homologation allow legal riding with the chin bar open, widening their potential use even further. Thanks to updated standards such as ECE 22.06, today’s modular helmets also offer significantly improved protection, narrowing the gap with traditional full-face helmets.
2. Key Features: What to Look for Before Buying
Choosing a modular helmet should not be based on aesthetics alone; several technical factors influence safety, comfort and long-term performance.
Safety and certification. Always ensure the helmet meets the ECE 22.06 standard and prioritise models with P/J dual homologation, which guarantees protection whether the chin bar is open or closed. Shell materials range from polycarbonate to composite fibres and carbon; generally, more advanced materials provide greater strength and reduced weight.
Chin bar mechanism. The opening system should be smooth, secure and easy to operate even with gloves. Double-action or safety-enhanced mechanisms reduce the risk of accidental opening.
Ventilation and noise. A good modular helmet must offer efficient airflow, particularly around the chin bar and upper vents. Noise insulation is equally important: modulars tend to be louder than full-face helmets, so touring-oriented designs with refined aerodynamics and quality liners are preferable.
Visor and sun visor. A Pinlock-ready visor is essential for anti-fog performance, especially in colder climates. The internal sun visor should provide wide coverage and operate quickly and smoothly.
Intercom compatibility. Most riders now use systems such as Cardo or Sena. Dedicated recesses, speaker pockets and clean external mounting points make installation easier and reduce aerodynamic noise.
3. Fit, Comfort and Long-Term Use: Ensuring the Right Choice
One of the most important aspects of choosing a modular helmet is the fit. A helmet that is too loose will vibrate and generate noise, while one that is too tight may cause discomfort and fatigue after only a short ride. The helmet should sit evenly around the head with no concentrated pressure points. Ideally, it should be worn for at least ten minutes when trying it on to check stability, cheek support and forehead pressure.
Weight also plays a major role. Fibre and carbon shells reduce strain on the neck, especially on longer journeys. For riders who spend hours on the road, even 100–150 grams can make a noticeable difference in comfort.
Finally, consider maintenance. A good modular helmet allows for easy removal and washing of the interior, straightforward replacement of visors and Pinlock inserts, and availability of spare parts over several years. In general, helmets should be replaced every five years or after a significant impact.
Choosing the right modular helmet requires careful evaluation, but investing in a high-quality model will greatly enhance comfort, safety and the overall riding experience.
