Podgorica Airport is recommended for starting and closing the loop. Tivat Airport is a good alternative for coastal access near Kotor.
Introduction
This three-stage loop offers a concentrated yet highly varied overview of Montenegro. Starting in Podgorica, the route climbs into the Moraca Canyon with a short detour to Moraca Monastery. A key highlight is the crossing of the Djurdjevica Tara Bridge before the final climb to Zabljak.
From there, the route runs south via Niksic and Cetinje to reach Kotor. The final stage follows the Adriatic corridor past Budva, stops above Sveti Stefan, then turns inland via Virpazar and Lake Skadar to close the loop back in Podgorica.
Fully paved, no repeated roads, and suited to experienced touring riders seeking landscape diversity rather than maximum mileage.
Practical notes and preparation
- Documents: valid ID or passport; driving licence; insurance green card recommended
- Currency: EUR accepted nationwide; carry cash in mountain areas
- Fuel: stations on main routes; refill before Durmitor sections
- Road conditions: good asphalt overall; debris possible after rain
- Riding advice: watch for livestock, wildlife, shaded corners at altitude
Seasonality
Best riding is May to June and September to early October. Durmitor and Zabljak can be cold and foggy outside summer. July and August bring coastal congestion around Budva and Kotor. Spring and autumn offer the best balance of temperature, visibility and traffic.

Stage 1 — Podgorica to Zabljak (approx. 210–220 km)
Leaving Podgorica, the road quickly enters the Moraca canyon where tight rock walls and river bends create a dramatic start. The asphalt is generally good and the rhythm alternates between technical corners and faster linking sections. After the highlight at the Djurdjevica Tara Bridge, the route climbs onto the Durmitor plateau with cooler air and open views. This stage sets the tone for the whole loop: canyon riding, altitude changes, and a clean finish in the alpine base of Zabljak, ideal for an early dinner and a short evening walk.

Stage 2 — Zabljak to Kotor (approx. 230–250 km)
Stage two is the queen stage: long, varied, and full of transitions. The route descends from the Durmitor highlands into broader valleys before linking through Niksic and then rising again toward Cetinje. The final approach delivers a memorable descent toward the Bay of Kotor, with tighter curves and expanding sea views. Start early to avoid coastal congestion and keep time for a short walk inside the old town after arrival. This stage rewards smooth riding and good pacing rather than speed, especially on the last descent.

Stage 3 — Kotor to Podgorica (approx. 190–210 km)
The final stage balances coastal icons with a calmer inland finale. After leaving Kotor, the route tracks the Adriatic corridor toward Budva, then pauses at the classic viewpoint over Sveti Stefan. From the coast, it turns inland to Virpazar and Lake Skadar, where the riding becomes more flowing and less technical, ideal for a relaxed finish. Expect short traffic pockets near the coast in peak season, but the inland section opens into wide curves and gentle elevation changes before returning smoothly to Podgorica to close the loop.
