The journey

129 EMJ – Algarve Interior Loop is a three-stage paved-road circuit from Faro into the Serra do Caldeirão and Guadiana border country, west through the Algarve interior to Silves, then around Monchique and the Costa Vicentina before a limestone-coast finale.

The accepted GPX is approximately 592 km. The overnight now moves from Silves to Monchique while the accepted route geometry remains unchanged, balancing the final two Stages without removing any established route sector.

Food & wine

The loop moves from Guadiana black-pork and mountain cooking to Silves citrus, seafood and nearby wine estates, then finishes with Ria Formosa fish and shellfish. Typical flavours include black pork, river fish, migas and açorda, Silves fish, shellfish and Morgado de Silves, and cataplana, Algarve DOC wine, Negra Mole and medronho. Wine tasting belongs after the motorcycle is parked.

Local meal rhythm: lunch is normally 12:00–15:00 and dinner 19:00–22:00. Smaller inland kitchens may close between services or offer limited evening service; check current opening hours before riding to dinner.

Seasonality & Weather

Best window: March–June and September–November. Summer heat can be severe inland; winter rain and Atlantic wind can change mountain and coastal conditions. Check IPMA forecasts, fire restrictions and current road access immediately before riding.

Rider preparation

Recommended kit

Navigation

Download the route GPX and ITN before departure; retain an offline map and check waypoints.

Weather

Carry waterproof layers and check mountain weather before the Caldeirão and Monchique sections.

Fuel

Review the stage fuel plan and check station hours before setting off.

Visits

Confirm opening times and reservations for caves, castles and Alcoutim experiences.

Rider Clothing & Kit

Prepare for forest and highland changes

Protective layers

Use CE-rated riding gear with a compact waterproof and windproof layer. Mountain temperatures and shaded roads may differ substantially from the valleys.

Hydration

Carry drinking water and allow time for breaks, particularly on warm summer days.

Visibility & power

Carry a clear visor, spare gloves, offline navigation and a reliable phone or GPS charger.

Useful extras

A compact tyre-repair and inflation kit, first aid and secure luggage are practical additions.

Practical Recommendations

Ride the shape, not the clock

Road rhythm

Allow extra time for bends, forest roads, viewpoints and town approaches. Do not use average speed as the only planning target.

Fuel & daylight

Start each Stage with sufficient fuel and use the route-specific primary and backup stops. Preserve daylight for mountain and cave-area visits.

Navigation

Follow the accepted GPX. Confirm that any navigation-device route preserves the intended road geometry and does not introduce shortcuts.

Local logistics

The route is in Portugal. Confirm accommodation, motorcycle parking and local access restrictions before departure.

Faro Airport (FAO) is the practical international gateway, with motorcycle rental available at or close to the airport.

Motorcycle rental in Faro

Fly-and-ride planning should start at Faro and Faro Airport. Hertz Ride operates a verified motorcycle-rental location at Faro Airport with touring and adventure motorcycles. Confirm current fleet, licence, insurance, luggage and deposit conditions before booking. Hertz Ride Faro ↗
