The journey

131 EMJ – Portugal Grand Tour · 7 Days is a seven-stage paved-road circuit from Lisbon through the Douro, Pinhão wine country, the Alentejo, Nazaré karst and the Serra da Estrela.

The route changes character each day: The route balances longer mountain and coastal days with manageable overnight stops; open each Stage for its route-specific plan.

Spring through early autumn is the practical riding window. Mountain weather, shaded surfaces and seasonal visitor traffic can change the riding rhythm, so live road and weather checks remain part of the plan.

Seasonality & Weather

Mountain roads can be cool, wet and shaded even when the coast and Douro are warm. Check current forecasts and road restrictions 24–48 hours before riding, especially around Douro, Serra da Estrela and Nazaré.

Rider preparation

Recommended kit

Navigation

Download the route GPX and ITN before departure; retain an offline map and check waypoints.

Weather

Carry waterproof layers and check mountain weather before the Douro and Serra da Estrela sections.

Fuel

Review the stage fuel plan and check station hours before setting off.

Visits

Confirm opening times and reservations for caves, castles and Pinhão experiences.

Rider Clothing & Kit

Prepare for forest and highland changes

Protective layers

Use CE-rated riding gear with a compact waterproof and windproof layer. Mountain temperatures and shaded roads may differ substantially from the valleys.

Hydration

Carry drinking water and allow time for breaks, particularly on warm summer days.

Visibility & power

Carry a clear visor, spare gloves, offline navigation and a reliable phone or GPS charger.

Useful extras

A compact tyre-repair and inflation kit, first aid and secure luggage are practical additions.

Practical Recommendations

Ride the shape, not the clock

Road rhythm

Allow extra time for bends, forest roads, viewpoints and town approaches. Do not use average speed as the only planning target.

Fuel & daylight

Start each Stage with sufficient fuel and use the route-specific primary and backup stops. Preserve daylight for mountain and cave-area visits.

Navigation

Follow the accepted GPX. Confirm that any navigation-device route preserves the intended road geometry and does not introduce shortcuts.

Local logistics

Confirm accommodation access, motorcycle parking and local restrictions before departure.

Lisbon Airport (LIS) is about 7 km from the city centre. ANA lists a direct Metro link, with the Airport–Saldanha journey taking about 20 minutes; check current service and baggage rules before travel.
