EPIC MOTO JOURNEY · ROUTE 130

Ribeira Sacra & Bierzo Loop

Monforte de Lemos · 593.3 km · 3 stages · Spain

Route-specific riding notes and verified service links. Schedules are planning estimates; recheck live conditions.

ALL · Complete route · 593.3 km / 368.7 mi

This three-stage loop begins and ends in Monforte de Lemos, crossing Galicia’s varied interior before turning through the Bierzo and back to the Sil valley. The first leg travels west toward O Carballiño, linking the broad approach roads with the greener valleys around the Arenteiro. The second bends through Ribeira Sacra and the eastern highlands toward Ponferrada, where the landscape opens from river gorges and vineyard terraces to the Bierzo basin. The final return crosses the Valdeorras and Sil country before descending to Monforte. The accepted circuit measures about 593 km on its detailed track; the three riding days are approximately 181 km, 211 km and 201 km. These are scenic, winding days, so treat moving times as planning estimates and leave daylight for stops. Ribeira Sacra roads can be narrow, steep and slow around viewpoints; fill up in larger towns before entering quieter sections and check weather and road notices before departure. Galicia’s maritime and mountain influences can bring showers, mist and changing temperatures even in the warmer months. Use the Stage buttons for the full daily riding notes, food, places to stay and arrival plans. Keep wine visits for after the bike is parked, and confirm opening hours and parking directly with each venue.

STAGE 1 · Monforte de Lemos → O Carballiño

181.4 km / 112.7 mi · ≈ 4 h 45 min moving · Moderate · winding rural roads

Stage 1 leaves Monforte de Lemos on the westbound arc toward O Carballiño, gradually trading the Sil valley’s vineyard country for the greener interior of Ourense. The first part is a useful time to settle into the route and keep a generous margin through smaller settlements. As the track turns toward the Miño and Arenteiro drainage, expect a mixture of open links, village approaches and shaded bends; avoid treating the distance as a fast transit day. A mid-morning pause near the route’s western high ground breaks up the first half, while lunch in the Ribadavia area keeps the day within the recommended meal window. The final approach to O Carballiño is a short town-entry task, with time to refuel or walk the centre after check-in. The town is known for the Romanesque-inspired Templo da Veracruz and its pulpo tradition; the route ends close to the Arenteiro parkland. Allow extra time for a visit or a long lunch, and check the exact opening schedule before leaving Monforte.

STAGE 2 · O Carballiño → Ponferrada

211.4 km / 131.4 mi · ≈ 5 h 30 min moving · Moderate / demanding · canyon and highland bends

Stage 2 is the longest riding day and the route’s scenic centrepiece. Leaving O Carballiño, the track heads toward the Ribeira Sacra, where the Miño and Sil valleys cut through steep, wooded terrain and vineyard terraces. Around the canyon viewpoints, narrow roads, blind bends and slower traffic call for a patient pace; wet leaves, mist and shaded surfaces can reduce grip. The route then turns east toward the Courel and O Cebreiro highlands before descending to Ponferrada and the Bierzo basin. This is a day for an early start, a firm lunch stop and fuel planning before quieter mountain stretches. The suggested rest near the Sil viewpoint is a brief pause rather than a long sightseeing visit; longer monastery, boat or winery visits should be moved to a non-riding day. Ponferrada offers a useful evening arrival around its Templar castle and old town. Check current road restrictions and local access on the day, especially after heavy rain, and do not rely on a map shortcut through an unpaved road.

STAGE 3 · Ponferrada → Monforte de Lemos

200.6 km / 124.6 mi · ≈ 5 h moving · Moderate · rural return and valley bends

Stage 3 closes the loop from Ponferrada back to Monforte de Lemos, crossing the open Bierzo basin before following the route west through Valdeorras and the Sil country. The morning offers an easier rhythm away from the tightest canyon roads, but village approaches and shaded bends still call for a measured pace. Plan the main meal around O Barco de Valdeorras, then use the afternoon pause to reset before the return toward the Ribeira Sacra. The last section reconnects the ride with the vineyard landscape seen on the first day, giving the loop a satisfying geographic finish rather than repeating the same road. Monforte’s historic centre, the old monastery complex and the wine museum make a rewarding evening or extra rest-day visit. If choosing a winery or wine museum stop, leave the motorcycle parked and check opening schedules first. Fuel availability becomes less predictable away from towns, so top up in Ponferrada or O Barco rather than assuming a rural station will be open. Allow an arrival buffer for the hilltop old town and hotel access.
