EPIC MOTO JOURNEY · ROUTE #126 · COMPLETE ROADBOOK
Serra da Estrela & Historic Villages Loop
416 km / 258 mi · 3 Stages
EMJ Route #126 is a true three-stage loop from Castelo Branco through the historic villages of Monsanto, Sortelha and Belmonte, across Serra da Estrela via Torre and Loriga, then through Piódão and the Serra do Açor before returning to Castelo Branco. The accepted rider-supplied GPX is the single geometry and elevation source.
The route is predominantly paved touring on secondary roads. Stage 2 is short in kilometres but intentionally slow because it reaches 1,993 m and is exposed to fast-changing mountain weather and temporary access restrictions. Recheck live road status immediately before riding.

EMJ #126 · STAGE 1
Castelo Branco → Belmonte
150 km / 93 mi · ≈ 3.5–4.5 h moving · Moderate
Stage description
Leave Castelo Branco north-east on quiet Beira Interior roads, letting the landscape open gradually towards Idanha-a-Nova. Monsanto is the first major pause: granite boulders, steep lanes and the castle ridge make it worth parking the motorcycle and walking. Continue through Penha Garcia, where the village sits beneath a dramatic rocky escarpment, before turning west towards Penamacor. The route then becomes more intimate, threading rolling country and old frontier settlements rather than chasing main-road speed. Sortelha is the visual climax of the afternoon, a remarkably complete walled village where granite houses sit inside medieval defences. From there the final kilometres lead towards Belmonte, with broad views across the eastern flank of Serra da Estrela. Traffic is generally light, but village approaches, polished stone, agricultural vehicles and occasional livestock deserve attention. Arrive with enough daylight to explore Belmonte’s castle area and Jewish quarter on foot before dinner and a relaxed overnight stay.

Castelo Branco → Belmonte riding brief
Suggested timing allows for normal stops; weather, traffic and visit duration can change the day.
Riding Timeline
Start with a full tank; leave urban traffic before the day warms.
Coffee and quick orientation stop; keep the visit short.
Park below the historic core; allow about 60 minutes for the granite village and castle approach.
Short photo stop beneath the rocky escarpment.
Fuel/coffee opportunity and 45-minute lunch window.
Allow 45–60 minutes inside the medieval walls; stone can be slippery when wet.
Secure the motorcycle before the compact historic-centre walking tour.
Rider Effort Profile
Frequent stops and narrow historic-village approaches reward a relaxed touring rhythm.
Fuel Plan
Start full in Castelo Branco. Treat Penamacor as the practical mid-stage fuel check; do not rely on small-village pumps without reconfirming hours.
Critical Sections
Monsanto and Sortelha have steep, narrow approaches and polished stone; agricultural traffic and livestock are possible on secondary roads.
Bad-weather / Closure Plan
In persistent rain, shorten the hilltop walks and use signed regional roads. Do not improvise on unpaved village access lanes.
Last Conditions Check
Recheck mountain access, wildfire restrictions, road works, fuel opening hours and daylight on the morning of departure. The ER339/ER338/Torre sector is weather- and event-sensitive.

Belmonte → Piódão
98 km / 61 mi · ≈ 2.5–3.5 h moving · Intermediate / mountain
Stage description
From Belmonte the route climbs quickly towards Covilhã and the high Serra da Estrela, turning a short stage into the most concentrated riding of the loop. Above Covilhã, Penhas da Saúde marks the transition from inhabited slopes to exposed mountain road. The ascent to Torre reaches 1,993 metres, the highest road-accessible point in mainland Portugal, where wind, cloud and temperature can change rapidly. Continue across the plateau towards Lagoa Comprida before descending through a sequence of broad bends and tighter mountain sections to Loriga. The scenery changes constantly, from granite uplands to wooded valleys and terraced settlements. Alvoco da Serra provides a useful pause before the final approach to Piódão, whose slate houses and blue-painted details appear dramatically on the mountainside. Despite the modest distance, allow generous time for viewpoints and changing conditions. Check live road access before departure, particularly the ER339, ER338 and Torre approaches, and avoid the high

Riding Timeline
Leave with a full tank and warm layers accessible.
Final urban fuel/weather check before climbing.
Ten-minute temperature and cloud check; turn back if visibility is deteriorating.
Weather permitting, allow 30–40 minutes at the high point.
Short photo/rest stop; exposed conditions remain possible.
Lunch window of about 60 minutes after the mountain descent.
Coffee/photo pause before the final mountain roads.
Park outside the tight village lanes and continue on foot.
Rider Effort Profile
Frequent stops and narrow historic-village approaches reward a relaxed touring rhythm.
Fuel Plan
Refuel in Covilhã before the high section. The short stage is intentionally not fuel-critical, but the summit sector should never be entered with a marginal range.
Critical Sections
ER339/ER338/Torre: altitude, wind, fog, low temperature, cyclists and temporary event/weather closures. Descents demand brake and tyre discipline.
Bad-weather / Closure Plan
If the high roads are closed or visibility is poor, do not bypass barriers. Replan on lower signed roads; skip the high sector and follow current signed lower-road guidance.
Last Conditions Check
Recheck mountain access, wildfire restrictions, road works, fuel opening hours and daylight on the morning of departure. The ER339/ER338/Torre sector is weather- and event-sensitive.

EMJ #126 · STAGE 3
Piódão → Castelo Branco
168 km / 104 mi · ≈ 4–5 h moving · Moderate
Stage description
Leave Piódão carefully, using the narrow mountain road to unwind from the Serra do Açor before settling into a longer southbound rhythm. Pampilhosa da Serra is the first natural break, after which the route crosses a quieter interior of forested ridges, river valleys and small settlements. Around Oleiros, keep the pace measured: bends are frequent and road surfaces can change after forestry work or heavy weather. Álvaro adds another compact schist-village stop above the Zêzere landscape before the route continues towards the Tagus. Vila Velha de Ródão provides the final major pause, with the Portas de Ródão landscape close by and easier roads signalling the return towards Castelo Branco. The last section deliberately approaches the city from a different direction than the opening stage, preserving the loop character. Fuel early enough to avoid relying on small village facilities, watch for debris on shaded bends, and reach Castelo Branco before dusk
