The journey

EMJ Route 124 is a 526.5 km clockwise loop from Évora through Monsaraz and Alqueva, the marble towns, Elvas, Serra de São Mamede, Castelo de Vide and the cork-oak plains back to Évora.

The accepted GPX geometry is the route authority. The first two Stages protect time for destination stops; Stage 3 is the longer return arc and requires an earlier start.

Food & Wine

The Alentejo is part of the riding experience: olive groves, cork oak, vineyards and cereal country shape the view for most of Route 124. Pão alentejano is central to açorda and many soups; migas commonly accompanies pork or lamb; porco preto, enchidos, regional sheep and goat cheeses, olives and olive oil recur across the region. In the cooler north around Serra de São Mamede, chestnuts, mushrooms and game add a more mountain-influenced character.

Five useful wine names to recognise are Borba DOC, Reguengos DOC, Portalegre DOC, Évora DOC and Vinho Regional Alentejano. Adega de Borba offers visitor tours and wine/olive-oil tasting by prior booking. For motorcycle travel, separate alcohol tasting from riding: use the route to discover producers and landscapes, then schedule tastings only after the bike is parked or on a non-riding extension.

Stages 1 and 2 leave room for a relaxed regional lunch. Stage 3 rewards a lighter lunch and longer recovery break around Avis or Coruche/Couço, followed by the full Alentejo dinner after arrival in Évora. In hot weather, hydration and shade take priority over adding another sightseeing stop.

Road-touring, sport-touring and adventure motorcycles are suitable.

Hydration

Carry water and sun protection, especially on exposed inland sections.

Footwear

Touring/ADV boots with useful walking grip for historic centres.

Airport

Évora gateway

Lisbon Airport (LIS) is the practical international gateway for both start and finish in Évora (approximately 129–131 km by road, around 1 h 20 min driving, traffic-dependent). Faro is a secondary southern option; its road distance is not verified in this build. Lisbon is not asserted to be the geographically nearest airfield.

Route files

Free GPX and Roadbook

Use the .gpx file for Garmin and most GPS/navigation apps, or the .itn file for compatible TomTom devices. Import the file and check the route before departure; current closures, local signs and live navigation always take priority.
