The journey

EMJ Route #122 is a three-stage paved loop through Bosnia and Herzegovina, linking Sarajevo, Mostar, Trebinje and Sutjeska National Park over approximately 608 km. It begins beside the Miljacka in Sarajevo, follows the Neretva corridor through Konjic and Jablanica, then climbs toward Blidinje’s exposed Dinaric plateau before descending into the warmer limestone basin of Mostar.

Stage 2 combines cultural stops and changing landscapes: the Buna spring at Blagaj, the fortified stone village of Počitelj, Hutovo Blato’s wetlands and the short Adriatic passage at Neum. The route then returns inland through Stolac and Ljubinje to Trebinje, where plane trees, vineyards, Žilavka and Vranac create the journey’s strongest food-and-wine arrival.

The final Stage is the most remote and demanding. From Bileća Lake and Gacko, the road enters the high country of Sutjeska National Park and Tjentište before following wooded valleys through Foča back to Sarajevo. Surfaces, visibility and weather can change quickly in the mountains, so conservative speed and flexible timing matter more than maintaining a fixed schedule.

The route is designed for riders who want a balanced mix of flowing paved roads, mountain scenery, historic towns and meaningful stops. Three riding days keep the distances manageable, but visits, photography, meals and arrival walks can turn each Stage into a full day. Start with a full tank, retain a practical fuel reserve and verify current road, weather and access conditions immediately before departure.

Herzegovinian and Bosnian flavours along the route

The Neretva corridor is a natural place for river trout, grilled meats and seasonal vegetables, while Mostar adds slow-cooked dishes and Herzegovinian wines. Look for indigenous white Žilavka and red Blatina.

Trebinje is the route’s strongest wine destination. The selected visits are Podrumi Vukoje 1982 and Tvrdoš Monastery winery. Pair local Vranac or Žilavka with pršut, sir iz mijeha and lamb.

Sarajevo closes the loop with ćevapi, burek, klepe and Bosnian coffee.

STAGE 1 · Sarajevo → Mostar

202.81 km / 126 mi≈ 4–5 h movingIntermediate

Sarajevo → Mostar

Stage description

Leave Sarajevo beside the Miljacka and settle into the Neretva corridor, where long bends lead through Konjic toward Jablanica. The route then turns away from the main valley and climbs into the quieter Dinaric landscape around Blidinje, trading traffic for open plateaux, mountain weather and expansive views. Posusje marks the transition into western Herzegovina before the road curls east toward Mostar. This is a varied first stage: fast connecting sections, slower mountain riding and several worthwhile photo stops demand measured pacing. Surface quality can change after winter, while shade may keep damp patches on higher roads. Start with a full tank, allow time for coffee in Konjic and resist rushing the approach to Blidinje. The final descent brings warmer air, limestone scenery and the first sight of the Mostar basin. Arrive early enough to park, change footwear and explore the Old Bridge quarter on foot before dinner beside the Neretva river at sunset.

Fuel Plan

Depart full and use only the checked primary/backup stops in the Fuel & Services dashboard. Do not plan around an unverified rural pump.

Opening hours and card acceptance remain dynamic; reconfirm on the riding morning.

Critical Sections

The Blidinje approach combines altitude, exposed bends, livestock and surface repairs; shaded patches may stay damp.

Bad-weather / Closure Plan

If the plateau is affected by fog, heavy rain or closure, omit Blidinje and remain on the principal Neretva/M17 corridor to Mostar; do not improvise on minor mountain roads.

Last Conditions Check

Recheck weather, road notices, fuel availability and attraction access 24–48 hours before departure and again before leaving. If visibility, runoff or debris reduces margins, shorten optional visits and use the principal paved corridor.

STAGE 2 · Mostar → Trebinje

Mostar → Trebinje

Stage description

From Mostar, follow the Buna to Blagaj, then continue through Počitelj and the wetlands of Hutovo Blato before briefly touching the Adriatic at Neum. The day is deliberately rich in stops: Ottoman architecture, karst springs, fortified villages and coastal views reward time off the motorcycle. After Neum, the route swings inland through Stolac and Ljubinje, where traffic thins and the landscape becomes stonier and more isolated. Fuel planning matters because services are less frequent than around Mostar, and summer heat can be intense on exposed sections. Expect border-region road signs, local speed changes and occasional agricultural traffic. The final run into Trebinje feels distinctly Mediterranean, with plane trees, vineyards and pale stone replacing the higher plateau scenery. Keep reserve time for short visits rather than turning the stage into a mileage exercise. Once parked, the compact old town, Arslanagić Bridge and riverside cafés make an easy arrival walk before a dinner built around Herzegovinian produce and local Vranac wine.

Critical Sections

Heat, glare, local agricultural traffic and long exposed stretches between Neum, Stolac and Ljubinje can quietly raise fatigue.

Bad-weather / Closure Plan

In extreme heat reduce walking stops; in heavy rain remain on principal paved roads and skip wetland or minor-road approaches. Preserve the accepted route unless a verified closure requires the signed alternative.

Trebinje → Sarajevo

Stage description

Trebinje gives way to the broad water of Bileća Lake before the M20 climbs toward Gacko and the high Dinaric plateau. Beyond Gacko, the road becomes the journey’s wildest section, approaching Sutjeska National Park through dramatic mountain scenery and the historic memorial landscape at Tjentište. Weather can change rapidly here; fog, heavy rain, fallen debris and animals on the road all justify conservative speed. The descent toward Foča follows steep wooded valleys, then the M18 turns north for the final run to Sarajevo. This corridor is scenic but demands attention because bends, rockfall zones and mixed traffic can compress margins. Take breaks before fatigue builds and avoid the section in severe weather. The stage closes the loop where it began, but its character is completely different from day one: remote, mountainous and historically resonant. Arrive with daylight remaining, refuel before returning the motorcycle if required, and use the evening for a relaxed walk through Baščaršija and along the Miljacka riverside.
