The journey

Sicily rewards a motorcycle tour that changes character every day, and this seven-stage Palermo loop is built around exactly that contrast. The opening ride follows the Tyrrhenian coast through Mondello, Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo before climbing to Erice. Stage 2 then stretches south through the Trapani salt pans, Marsala, Selinunte and the long southern coast to Agrigento. From there the route leaves the sea, crosses the interior through Caltagirone and reaches the Baroque stone of Ragusa Ibla.

The south-east is deliberately explored rather than bypassed. Modica, Scicli, Portopalo, Marzamemi and Noto form a full riding day before Siracusa, after which the journey changes scale again on Mount Etna. The sequence through Zafferana, Rifugio Sapienza, Rifugio Citelli and Piano Provenzana is the volcanic core of the tour: cooler air, lava fields, forest and repeated elevation changes. The following stage crosses the Nebrodi through Randazzo, Cesarò and Portella Femmina Morta, while the final day reaches Palermo only after a second mountain chapter through the Madonie, Piano Battaglia, Castelbuono and Cefalù.

All 1,255 km are on a paved touring route, but this is not a fast-distance itinerary. Village approaches, historic centres, mountain weather and the number of worthwhile stops keep average speeds modest. The stage lengths are therefore intentionally uneven: the shorter Nebrodi and Etna days leave room for slower roads and changing conditions, while the longer coastal days demand earlier starts and more selective sightseeing. An intermediate rider on a well-maintained touring motorcycle should find the route manageable, provided mountain sections are treated with respect and urban access is planned. Late spring and early autumn usually offer the best balance for this style of journey; in every season, recheck Etna access, high-road weather, local traffic restrictions and opening hours shortly before riding.

Ride planning

Practical recommendations

Road rhythm

Historic centres, coastal villages and mountain sections keep average speeds modest. Treat stop time as part of each stage rather than trying to ride the kilometre figure quickly.

Etna, Nebrodi & Madonie

High-road weather can differ sharply from the coast. Carry a warm mid-layer and waterproof shell even when the lower stages are hot.

Heat & traffic

In warm months, start early on the longer coast stages and keep water margins. Resort towns and beach approaches can become slow later in the day.

Historic centres

Follow hotel instructions and local signs for ZTL, parking and restricted access. Park once and use the arrival walking tours rather than forcing the motorcycle into old-town lanes.

Seasonality & rider kit

When to ride and what to carry

Recommended period

Late spring and early autumn offer a useful balance between daylight, coastal temperatures and mountain conditions.

Mountain layer

Pack a windproof or thermal layer for Etna, the Nebrodi and Madonie, where temperature and cloud can change quickly with altitude.

Rain protection

Light waterproof outer layers are worthwhile even on a Mediterranean itinerary because the high stages are exposed.

Before departure

Recheck Etna access, mountain weather, local traffic restrictions, attraction opening times and any temporary road works shortly before riding.
