Loire Castles & Vercors Grand Tour from Oulx
A 2142 km (1331 mi) asphalt loop linking the Italian Alps, the Vercors balcony roads, the Loire châteaux, Paris, Burgundy and Annecy.
Route overview
The loop starts and finishes in Oulx, using the Montgenevre corridor to enter France before reaching Die and the southern approach to the Vercors. The most technical riding comes through Col de Rousset, Vassieux-en-Vercors and Combe Laval, before the route progresses west through Auvergne and towards the Loire.
The château sequence begins after Montlucon and Bourges, with Valençay, Loches, Chenonceau, Amboise, Chambord, Blois, Chaumont-sur-Loire and Villandry used as real waypoints. Paris is reached via Vendome, Chartres and Versailles. The return avoids repeating the Loire approach by riding through Fontainebleau, Sens, Auxerre, Beaune, the Jura edge, Annecy and the Petit Saint-Bernard corridor back to Oulx.
Nearest airports: Turin Caselle (TRN) about 1 h 20 min from Oulx; Lyon Saint-Exupéry (LYS) about 2 h 15 min from Annecy / the return corridor; Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) for joining or leaving around the capital stage.

Technical overview
Practical riding notes
The Vercors section has the highest riding intensity: exposed balconies, tunnels, rock walls and variable mountain weather. The Loire stages are slower and visit-heavy, so leave time for parking and walking at the castles. Paris should be approached patiently, with secure parking agreed in advance. The return through Burgundy, the Jura edge and Annecy avoids a single monotonous motorway transfer.
Seasonality & safety
May to October is the preferred window. Early or late season can bring cold rain, fog and temporary restrictions on high Alpine approaches. Ride the Vercors cliffs carefully after rain, keep distance from tourist traffic around Loire castle entrances, and expect heavier traffic when entering and leaving Paris.
Roadbook
Stage 1 · Oulx to Die · 219 km (136 mi)
Oulx → Claviere → Briançon → Col du Lautaret → La Mure → Mens → Die
The first stage is a true border-to-valley opener, leaving Oulx and climbing towards Claviere. Ski villages, stone houses and high ridgelines mark the passage from the Susa Valley into France. After the border, Briançon is worth more than a fuel stop; its Vauban fortifications, old streets and mountain amphitheatre give the first strong cultural pause of the journey. From there the itinerary continues towards the Col du Lautaret, where the landscape opens into broad, high-altitude views and the road becomes more flowing. This section gives the stage its touring character: wide bends, changing light, distant peaks and the feeling of moving from the Italian Alps into a larger French mountain system. The descent towards La Mure and Mens softens the profile, with lower ridges, warmer valleys and more rural scenery. The final approach to Die introduces vineyards, limestone slopes and the quieter Diois atmosphere. It is an ideal first overnight: still surrounded by mountains, but perfectly positioned for the Vercors climb the following morning.

Stage 2 · Die to Le Puy-en-Velay · 263 km (164 mi)
Die → Col de Rousset → Vassieux-en-Vercors → La Chapelle-en-Vercors → Combe Laval → Pont-en-Royans → Lamastre → Le Cheylard → Mézilhac → Le Puy-en-Velay
This is the most scenic and technical mountain stage of the loop. Leaving Die, the road rises towards the Col de Rousset, one of the great southern gateways into the Vercors plateau. The climb moves from wooded lower slopes to open bends, limestone walls and long views back towards the Diois. Once over the pass, the route enters high country. Vassieux-en-Vercors brings plateau openness and historical weight, while La Chapelle-en-Vercors gives the day a compact village pause before the road becomes more spectacular. The essential POI is Combe Laval, a balcony road carved directly into the cliff. Here the scenery is vertical: tunnels, rock faces, parapets, hanging views and sudden shafts of light. Ride it slowly, keep generous distance and stop only where safe. The descent to Pont-en-Royans closes the Vercors section with one of the most photogenic villages of the route. The road then continues west through wooded and rolling terrain towards the Ardèche highlands and Le Puy-en-Velay, making this a demanding but unforgettable day.

Stage 3 · Le Puy-en-Velay to Montluçon · 211 km (131 mi)
Le Puy-en-Velay → Brioude → Issoire → Riom → Montluçon
Stage three is a transition across the Auvergne shoulder of the journey. Departing from Le Puy-en-Velay, the volcanic skyline of chapels, old stone and steep streets gives the morning an unmistakable start. The road towards Brioude becomes more open and relaxed than the Vercors, with rolling countryside and a broader rhythm. Brioude is worth a brief stop for its historic centre and Romanesque atmosphere. Continuing towards Issoire, the road shows the softer side of central France: agricultural valleys, distant volcanic forms and a touring pace that is less intense but still rewarding. Riom brings the route close to the Clermont-Ferrand plain, where the landscape opens out and the ride becomes more about flow and distance than technical challenge. The final approach to Montluçon marks the gradual move away from the mountains and towards the Loire corridor. Montluçon’s medieval upper town, castle area and useful services make it a sensible overnight. This stage keeps the loop progressive without backtracking or forcing a dull motorway transfer, and it also gives the rider time to recover after the concentration required by the Vercors.

Stage 4 · Montluçon to Amboise · 255 km (159 mi)
Montluçon → Bourges → Valençay → Loches → Chenonceaux → Amboise
Stage four introduces the Loire theme in earnest. Leaving Montluçon, the route heads towards Bourges, a city worth a short stop for its cathedral and medieval centre. The early kilometres are practical and progressive, moving through central France towards the first major château waypoints. After Bourges, the atmosphere changes. Château de Valençay is the first clear Loire-style highlight, elegant and formal, with a strong Napoleonic connection. The road then continues towards Loches, whose medieval fortress gives a more defensive, stone-built contrast to the later Renaissance architecture. The final major POI is Château de Chenonceau, one of the most recognisable castles in France, stretched across the river Cher like a bridge. It is an essential photo stop and a good moment to slow the pace. The ride then finishes in Amboise, where the Loire, the royal château and the memory of Leonardo da Vinci give the evening real character.

Stage 5 · Amboise to Tours via the Loire Castles · 161 km (100 mi)
Amboise → Château de Chambord → Col du Lautaret panorama → Chaumont-sur-Loire → Château de Villandry → Tours
Stage five is deliberately compact because its value lies in the density of major Loire POI rather than distance. Starting from Amboise, the route moves towards Château de Chambord, the grand architectural set-piece of the Loire. Chambord is vast, theatrical and instantly recognisable, with towers, chimneys and a skyline that dominates the surrounding forest. From there the route continues to Château Royal de Blois, where royal history is layered into the town itself. Blois feels more urban and lived-in than Chambord, which gives the day a welcome contrast. The road then returns towards the river around Chaumont-sur-Loire, one of the best places to enjoy the wider Loire landscape. The final château waypoint is Villandry, famous for its formal gardens. The stage ends in Tours, a lively base with restaurants, hotels and a convenient position for the ride towards Paris.

Stage 6 · Tours to Paris · 233 km (145 mi)
Tours → Vendôme → Chartres → Versailles → Paris
The ride from Tours to Paris is designed as a gradual cultural transition. The first part heads towards Vendôme, where the Loire feeling starts to fade into broader northern landscapes. The road then reaches Chartres Cathedral, one of the great Gothic landmarks of France and one of the most meaningful stops of the day. Even a short pause here gives the stage a strong cultural anchor. From Chartres, the route continues towards Versailles, which acts as a ceremonial entrance to the Parisian world before the actual urban traffic begins. This makes arrival in the capital feel more gradual and less abrupt. The final kilometres into Paris require patience: expect denser traffic, frequent speed restrictions and the complexity of a major European city. Once the motorcycle is parked, Paris becomes a walking stage, with possible evening stops around the Seine, the Eiffel Tower area, Montmartre or the Arc de Triomphe.

Stage 7 · Paris to Beaune · 328 km (204 mi)
Paris → Fontainebleau → Sens → Auxerre → Beaune
Stage seven is the longest day of the loop and should be treated as a purposeful transfer with selected historic breaks. Leaving Paris, the route heads south-east towards Fontainebleau rather than retracing the Loire approach. This gives the departure a more graceful character, with forest and château associations replacing the intensity of the city. From Fontainebleau, the road continues towards Sens, a useful stop with cathedral heritage and a compact old centre. The next important waypoint is Auxerre, one of the best pauses of the day. Its riverfront, church towers and old streets introduce Burgundy atmosphere before the route reaches wine country proper. The final destination, Beaune, is ideal after a longer stage: compact, handsome, walkable and full of wine-town character. The Hospices area, old walls and restaurant streets give the evening a strong sense of place.

Stage 8 · Beaune to Annecy · 217 km (135 mi)
Beaune → Lons-le-Saunier → Nantua → Bellegarde-sur-Valserine → Annecy
Stage eight avoids the obvious Lyon motorway corridor and uses the Jura edge to keep the return scenic. From Beaune, the road moves towards Lons-le-Saunier, where the landscape starts to rise and become greener. This is not yet high Alpine riding; it is softer, more wooded and more rolling, with ridgelines, agricultural valleys and a quieter rhythm than the Paris–Burgundy stage. Nantua is one of the best scenic pauses, set beside its lake and surrounded by steep hills. It gives the day a strong visual midpoint and signals that the mountains are returning. The route then continues through Bellegarde-sur-Valserine, where river valleys, bridges and tighter geography begin to pull the road towards the Annecy basin. The final approach to Annecy can be busy in summer, but the destination is one of the most beautiful of the whole loop.

Stage 9 · Annecy to Oulx · 255 km (158 mi)
Annecy → Albertville → Bourg-Saint-Maurice → Col du Petit Saint-Bernard → Oulx
The final stage closes the loop with a proper mountain-road finish. Leaving Annecy, the route heads towards Albertville, where the road begins to feel fully Alpine again. The valley tightens, the backdrop rises and the riding becomes more purposeful. Bourg-Saint-Maurice is a key waypoint before the final high crossing and a good place to refuel or pause. From there, the route turns towards the Col du Petit Saint-Bernard, the symbolic closing pass of the journey. Unlike the outward approach through Montgenevre, this return gives the loop a different Alpine identity: open slopes, high meadows, border history and long views into both France and Italy. Weather can change quickly here, so keep layers accessible and avoid rushing if fog, wind or rain arrives. The descent towards the Italian side gradually brings the rider back into the upper Susa Valley. The final kilometres into Oulx complete the circle without repeating the same main approach used at the start.
