Introduction

This one-day loop leaves Varese and immediately settles into classic northern Lombardy riding, gentle lake roads, quick transitions between water and hills, and a rhythm that never feels rushed. The route passes the edges of Lake Varese, reaches Laveno Mombello on the Lombardy shore of Lake Maggiore, then follows the upper lakes towards Luino and the Italian side of Lake Lugano. Around the midpoint, the ride slows down near Porlezza and Carlazzo, ideal for a proper lunch stop without waiting until the end of the day.

From there, the road cuts across to Menaggio, one of the key gateways to Lake Como, before continuing south to Como and closing the loop back in Varese. It is a route designed for a full day out rather than outright pace: coffee on the Maggiore shore, lunch around the Lugano–Como transition, a few scenic pauses, and a relaxed final run home. Laveno and Luino are highlighted by Varese tourism among the main towns of the Lombardy shore of Lake Maggiore, while Menaggio is promoted as one of the strategic gateways on Lake Como, which makes this compact loop feel far richer than its mileage suggests.

Technical Overview

  • Total distance: approximately 150-160 km.
  • Suggested duration: full day, with scenic and meal stops.
  • Road surface: 100% tarmac.
  • Character: lakeside roads, rolling pre-alpine bends, occasional urban traffic near Como.
  • Effort level: straightforward for most experienced road riders, but patience is useful around busier lakefront sections.

Practical Riding Notes

  • Start early to enjoy quieter stretches between Varese, Laveno and Luino.
  • The lunch stop is intentionally placed around the route midpoint, near Porlezza/Carlazzo.
  • Lakefront traffic can build up around Menaggio and Como, especially on weekends.
  • Best ridden in spring, early summer or clear autumn days.
  • Fuel and services are easy to find all along the loop.

Seasonality & Safety

This ride works particularly well from March to October. In high summer, the scenery is superb but traffic around the major lake towns can slow the pace. In spring and autumn, visibility is usually cleaner and the riding feels more fluid. Watch for damp patches in shaded sections early in the morning, local traffic near ferry terminals, and seasonal crowds around Menaggio and Como.

Roadbook

Stage 1 · Varese → Laveno Mombello → Luino → Ponte Tresa → Porlezza/Carlazzo → Menaggio → Varese · ~190 km

The loop begins with an easy exit from Varese towards the lakeside roads above Lake Varese and then reaches Laveno Mombello, one of the classic viewpoints on the Lombardy side of Lake Maggiore. From there, stay northbound through the Maggiore shore to Luino, then continue east towards Ponte Tresa and the Italian bank of Lake Lugano. The midpoint of the day is the Porlezza–Carlazzo area, where the ride naturally slows and lunch makes sense before the short but rewarding transfer to Menaggio. The final section follows the western branch of Lake Como before turning inland for the return to Varese.
